ASU's Financial Planning Certificate

Appalachian State University is a registered program with Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) in Denver, Colorado. The Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance offers a curriculum that covers the knowledge base needed to succeed in the field of personal financial planning as determined by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.

At ASU, the course requirements to apply for the CFP® Certification Examination consist of six courses:

  • Principles of Risk Management & Insurance (FIN 3071)
  • Estate Planning (FIN 3780)
  • Retirement and Employee Benefit Planning (FIN 3880)
  • Survey of Investments (FIN 3890)
  • Individual Income Tax (ACC 3580)
  • Financial Planning (FIN 4580)

These classes are offered through a degree program (BSBA – Finance) and a certificate program in financial planning. Currently, classes meet only at the Walker College of Business in Boone, North Carolina. Successful completion of the either program, with a C- or better in each course, will make a student eligible to apply for the CFP® Certification Examination.

The CFP® certification is an internationally recognized mark of distinction and is a symbol of the highest level of professionalism in the field of Financial Planning. CFP® certification is granted by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. In order to be a CFP® certificant a student must pass the CFP® Certification Examination, complete three to five years of work experience in a financial planning field, and comply with CFP Board's Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility.

CFP Board can not predetermine whether individuals will meet certain requirements, but will offer counsel to individuals seeking guidance about the education, bachelor's degree or experience requirements.

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and CFP (with flame logo)®, which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements.

Appalachian State University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and CFP (with flame logo)® certification marks. CFP certification is granted only by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met its ethics, experience, and examination requirements.
